The United States Environmental Protection Agency Announces a Time-Critical Removal Action at the Buckhead Slag Removal Site in Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia and the Availability of the Administrative Record for Public Review and Comment The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announces the availability of the Administrative Record for public review and comment for a time-critical removal action at the Buckhead Slag Removal Site (the Site) in Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia. The Administrative Record contains documents that support the selection by the EPA to fund and perform a time-critical removal action at the Site in an Action Memorandum dated July 28, 2023. The Site is an area of lead-contaminated soil in the backyard of two adjacent residential properties in Atlanta, Georgia. Visible slag waste is present along the fence line between the two properties. Slag is an industrial waste by-product of smelting ores and used metals. On or about June 9, 2022, the Georgia Environmental Protection Division referred the Site to the EPA. The EPA determined in an Action Memorandum that a time-critical removal action is needed to remove lead-contaminated soil to address actual or potential releases of hazardous substances at the Site. The time-critical removal action is estimated to be completed within one year of initiation of on-site response actions and will include excavation of lead-contaminated soil, off-site disposal, backfilling with clean soil, restoration of areas disturbed by the removal action to their pre-removal state to the extent practicable, monitoring and sampling ambient dust levels generated by response actions to ensure health and safety to nearby populations or property, among other actions.
